Spring 2007: Guide to Well-Being

Nurse practitioners and physicians assistants do a great job of taking care of patients, but some times they don’t take care of themselves. This issue looks at the real-life examples of NPs and PAs and how they can make time in their busy days to develop leadership skills, improve their diet and exercise habits, and even volunteer work. Those who take these measures find that they feel better and find more fulfillment in their work.

Summer 2007: Error Proofing Your Practice

As physician assistants and nurse practitioners assume more expansive roles in the healthcare system, they share the challenge and responsibility of preventing medical errors. In communities across the country, clinicians are often on the front line of patient safety, providing critical services to families and individuals of all ages. This issue will look at the specific role PAs and NPs have in helping to ensure patient safety.

Fall 2007: Effective Communications

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants have a special role in communicating with patients as well as their colleagues. NPs and PAs are often the ones who take the doctor’s orders and translate them into a routine that patients can fit into their day-to-day lives. NPs and PAs also facilitate the flow of information from physicians to others in the practice or healthcare organization. This issue will look at this special role and how NPs and PAs can hone their skills and use technology and other tools to overcome common communication barriers, such as low healthcare literacy or cultural differences.
